William D. Roach

William Roach

William is a French Acadian born and raised in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia. He is completely self-taught and has done woodcarvings and paintings since he was a child. He has been very fortunate to have been able to make his living at what he loves to do for the last 26 years.

Many pieces of his work are very colourful and whimsical and all of his woodcarvings are made of pine and then painted. A number of his pieces are commissioned and the rest is left up to his creative imagination. He has work worldwide and some have also gone as far as Switzerland.

You can find William at his studio in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia where his work is shown at the Sunset Art Gallery. The Sunset Art Gallery is owned and operated by his wife Linda Roach. Some of his work can also be seen at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax, The Scotian Ocean Gallery in Mahone Bay as well as Folk Art Maritime in Lunenburg.

He was the 2005 recipient of the GRAND-PRÉ PRIZE which goes to an Acadian artist of Nova Scotia who is recognized for their artistic excellence and originality and has achieved professional status and recognition.

In June 2014, William D. Roach received the Excellence in Craft Award from the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design.
